Long time, no LJ!

[1] I ate a grasshopper today. xD Ever since I watched the Why Not Eat Insects? Ted Talk, the idea has been interesting to me. My dad cooked some today, so I tried one. It was not pleasant experience, lol. Maybe if it were differently prepared though...? #countrylivin'

[2] Tomorrow I will be on a mini vacation with a friend until Friday. We are renting a little cottage on Lake Huron. Excited! Minimal to no internet. Will try to take pics and post upon return.

[3] Now I'm just going to babble about various things I have been consuming lately:

Legend of Korra (tv/streaming) - My new favorite thing right now, tbh. It has been fun to fall in love with something animated again (I haven't really loved anything animated since Hey Arnold). The action scenes are brilliant (haven't really loved action on tv this much since Xena!). And the female characters. Korra, Jinora, Beifong, Asami... I'm so grateful a show like LoK exists right now. There aren't nearly enough action women in leading roles these days. I know discussions on strong female characters these days always emphasize characterization over physical power--and I agree, the term "strong female character" has never meant anything else to me--but I'm very greedy, and I want both. I have always loved watching action ladies kicking butt.

Orphan Black (tv) - I watched season one! Really a terrific story. I want morrrre! I don't have my hands on season two yet though.

Interesting links I wanted to pass along!

[1] author_by_night's La Morte de Livejournal. Click and be polled.

[2] pennswoods's Why Do You Ship What You Ship

Love the comments in that one. I often wonder why I ship my ships so hard and what purpose they serve in my life. I know that my ships mean quite a lot to me. I know that they are satisfying to me to me personally for unique reasons, and that I can be very picky about how they are portrayed. Admittedly my thoughts aren't really coherent enough to come to many conclusions right now, but I think fandom poetry has for me been one of the more useful and satisfying tools I've exercised for this kind of examination.

I heard Jason Isbell on PBS the other night and have been youtube-ing him ever since. I don't stop and appreciate music often enough these days, but luckily he hooked me. Lots of sad stories in mellow arrangements. :) I love everything I've heard from his Southeastern album. His song "Elephant" was the first one I heard and it grabbed me because it deals with cancer. "Cover Me Up" is one of those songs that feels like it has always existed.

Visiting home today, enjoying unlimited internet and toasty fireplace. Here's another OTP Challenge update: A song that describes your OTP well and/or a song you wish they would cover.

I avoided this because I was initially drawing a blank and figured my answers would turn out contrived, but once I started digging, I uncovered the old songs that really do hit the spot for me.

For years I've resisted the siren call of e-readers and tablets (reasoning that my laptop was enough for me), but... I've crumbled. She was on sale very reasonably. I have named her Helen-Alice, after my favorite Super Fun Night character. My laptop (Morgana) is possibly a little jealous (poor Morgana has three keys missing due to a recent tumble, not to mention various other signs of old age. Practically falls apart a little more every time I touch her, lol).

So I've been reading longfic aplenty on Helen-Alice. I am now on a very limited data Mifi internet connection until late March, so I've downloaded loads of longfic to distract me from lack of internet funtimes. I'm not around much and I don't think I will be doing a Hey Arnold Valentine's friending frenzy this year, I'm sad to say.

Anyway, I must share recs. Here are two particularly brilliant Merlin fics I've been squeeing over!

[1] Been able to work on some poems recently, even finishing one. *happy dance* A small accomplishment, but it feels good. I do love writing, even though I hate it too? Lol.

[2] Anndi McAfee (voice of Phoebe) posted the cutest pic the other day of her, Olivia Hack, and Craig Bartlett out to lunch. Made me squee. :D It's just so nice to know that the HA cast are still friendly and everything. <3

[3] I'm so bad at daily stuff, but I'll just carry on with the OTP Challenge whenever I get the chance. :P

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.

I've never participated in a [community profile] snowflake_challenge before, so I'm kind of just jumping in here. Hopefully I'll be able to fill a few more after this one! Today it was seeing [personal profile] lightbird's lovely picspam for the current challenge that inspired me to want to do a picspam myself. Hers is for the black and white film, Double Indemnity, which reminded me of how much I like contrast and heavy shadows in film and photography, and for the purpose of my own picspam, in some of the promotional photography for Merlin.

The Merlin folks have given us a lot of beautifully lit photos that I have made a habit of saving in a folder. It was the first time I've ever been so enchanted by a TV series' promotional photos as really impressive, creative, and evocative photography. In some ways, they even paint the series in a different light when you put them together like this, making it seem more dark than it generally was. So here is my little appreciative picspam featuring some of my favorite shadow-heavy photos. No further commentary provided, since I don't really know what else to say, and they speak for themselves.

All photos can be seen in their full-size glory at Merlin's Keep.
